The GPS Receiving Unit - Trimble GeoExplorerII

(Parts of this page were adapted from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign website, http://www.urban.uiuc.edu/tutorials/GPS/rover.html, accessed 7/2/2002; also from Trimble's GeoExplorer II Operation Manual.)

If you are generally gadget-savvy, you should have no trouble figuring out how to use the GeoII simply by spending a few minutes going through the menus. For the rest of us, here's a few helps:

The Buttons

-To turn the unit on, press
-To turn it off, press  and hold for 5 seconds
-To scroll through the menu list, use the up  and down  buttons
-To select a menu item, press the  button
-To exit from the current menu item or menu, press the Esc button

The Menus

All functions are accessed from a series of menus. The main menu is as follows:
- Main Menu -
1. Data Capture
2. Position
3. GPS Status
4. Navigation
5. Date and Time
6. Configuration
7. Data Transfer
1. Data Capture - The items under Data Capture allow you to open a rover or base file and record data. You can also review files, delete files, review and delete the data dictionary.

2. Position - The Position option displays the current position; latitude, longitude and altitude. You can check whether positions are currently being computed or if the position displayed is old.

3. GPS Status - The items under GPS Status allow you to check which satellites are being tracked, where the satellites are and what their signal strengths are. You can also get an indication of the accuracy of the positions being calculated. (You'll find yourself using this option quite a lot.)

4. Navigation - The items under Navigation allow you to store waypoints, select which points you want to navigate to and from, choose which format of navigation screen you require and view the screen as you navigate.

5. Date and Time - The Date & Time option displays the current date and time.

6. Configuration - The items under Configuration allow you to set the parameters that control data collection, display and data transfer.

7. Data Transfer - The Data Transfer option lets you transfer files between the GeoExplorer II receiver and the PC.
