GPS Info & Tutorial

What is GPS?
GPS is the Global Positioning System developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. Using satellites and a special receiving device called a GPS unit, you can pinpoint your position on Earth with reasonable accuracy. GPS is most often used for navigation, wayfinding and field surveys. For more detailed info on GPS, click here.

The GPS Receiving Unit

The RS/GIS Teaching Lab has two kinds of GPS units in-house: Other units may be available from your department or professors. Generally speaking, the underlying principles of operation are the same for these units as they are for the ones listed above.
