CODE COVER-TYPE
Cover-Type categories are listed by principle species which define the cover-type. If principle species are extensive they are included as a separate listing. Landscape scale cover-type mapping includes many prevalent primary associated species which can substantially occur as part of the cover-type in localized areas. This is not intended to be a complete species list, but rather an overview of the most common species associated with each cover-type. General descriptions of each cover-type and a brief distribution of the cover-type is included. Distributions are typically referenced by Mapping Zones (Figure 1).
 
CONIFER TREES
1. ALPINE FIR Conifer woodland principally dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa at canopies < 30%.
2. ALPINE FIR Conifer forest principally dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa at canopies from 30-59%.
3. ALPINE FIR Conifer forest principally dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmanii, Pinus albicaulis, Pinus flexilis and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia tridentata, Juniperus communis, Ribes spp., Shepardia canadensis, Symphoricarpos oreophilus and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is widespread throughout all mapping zones, except Snake River Plain. It is most common in the eastern Idaho and western Wyoming mapping zones, with significant stands also in the Payette.
5. ALPINE FIR/DOUG FIR - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii at canopies from 30-59%.
6. ALPINE FIR/DOUG FIR - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmannii, Pinus flexilis and Populus tremuloides.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia tridentata, Ribes spp., Shepardia canadensis, Symphoricarpos oreophilus and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is mostly in Caribou, with some limited distribution in Payette.
8. ALPINE FIR/LODGEPOLE - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and lodgepole pine Pinus contorta at canopies from 30-59%.
9. ALPINE FIR/LODGEPOLE - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and lodgepole pine Pinus contorta at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmannii, Pinus albicaulis, Populus tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Ribes spp., Shepardia canadensis, Symphoricarpos oreophilus and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is rare in Cassia and Lost River and most common in Caribou, Frank Church, Sawtooth and Shoshone.
10. ALPINE FIR/SPRUCE - Conifer woodland principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and engelmann spruce Picea engelmannii at canopies < 30%.
11. ALPINE FIR/SPRUCE - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and engelmann spruce Picea engelmannii at canopies from 30-59%.
12. ALPINE FIR/SPRUCE - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and engelmann spruce Picea engelmannii at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Pinus contorta, Pinus albicaulis, Populas tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Lonicera utahensis, Ribes spp., Symphoricarpos oreophilus, and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is occurs moderately in Frank Church and is very common in Caribou and Shoshone.
13. ALPINE FIR/WHITEBARK - Conifer woodland principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and whitebark pine Pinus albicaulis at canopies < 30%.
14. ALPINE FIR/WHITEBARK - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and whitebark pine Pinus albicaulis at canopies from 30-59%.
15. ALPINE FIR/WHITEBARK - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by sub-alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and whitebark pine Pinus albicaulis at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmannii, Pinus flexilis, Pinus contorta, and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes and Artemisia tridentata, Juniperus communis, Ribes spp., Shepardia canadensis, Symphoricarpos oreophilu, and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is occurs commonly in Frank Church and sparingly in Caribou, Sawtooth and Shoshone.
16. DOUG FIR - Conifer woodland principally dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii. At canopies < 30%.
17. DOUG FIR - Conifer forest principally dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii. At canopies from 30-59%.
18. DOUG FIR - Conifer forest principally dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmannii,,Pinus ponderosa, Pinus contorta, Pinus flexilis, Abies lasiocarpa, Abies grandis and Populas Tremuloides,

Distribution - This class is common in most mapping zones except for limited occurrence in Owyhee and its absence in Snake River Plain.
20. DOUG FIR/GRAND FIR - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii. and grand fir Abies grandis at canopies from 30-59%.
21. DOUG FIR/GRAND FIR - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii. and grand fir Abies grandis at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmanni, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus contorta, Larix occidentalis and Abies lasiocarpa.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Berberis repens, Philadelphus lweisii, Physocarpus malvaceus, Prunus virginiana, Ribes spp., Vaccinium spp., Spiraea betulifolia and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class is only occurs in Payette.
22. DOUG FIR/LODGEPOLE - Conifer woodland principally co-dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii. and lodgepole pine Pinus contorta at canopies < 30%.

26. DOUG FIR/PONDEROSA PINE - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii. and Ponderosa Pine Pinus ponderosa at canopies from 30%-59%.
27. DOUG FIR/PONDEROSA PINE - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii. and ponderosa pine Pinus ponderosa at canopies > 60%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Pinus contorta.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Berberis repens, Physocarpus malvaceus, Prunus virginiana, Ribes spp., Salix scouleriana and Spiraea betulifolia.

Distribution - This class is occurs commonly in Frank Church, Payette and Sawtooth.
28. GRAND FIR - Conifer woodland principally dominated by grand fir Abies grandis at canopies < 30%.
29. GRAND FIR - Conifer forest principally dominated by grand fir Abies grandis at canopies from 30-59%.
30. GRAND FIR - Conifer forest principally dominated by grand fir Abies grandis at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasiocarpa Larix occidentalis, Picea engelmanni, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus contorta and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Berberis repens, Lonicera utahensis, Physocarpus malvaceus, Prunus virginiaia, Ribes spp, Philadelphus lewisii, Symphoricarpos spp., Spiraea betulifolia and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is only occurs in Payette.
31. JUNIPER, UTAH - Conifer woodland principally dominated by utah juniper Juniperus osterosperma at canopies < 30%.
32. JUNIPER, UTAH - Conifer forest principally dominated by utah juniper Juniperus osterosperma at canopies from 30-59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolius and Pinus monophylla.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Chrysothamnus spp., Purshia tridentata, Prunus virginiana and Symphoricarpos oreophilus.

Distribution - This class is found mostly in Cassia, with limited distribution in Caribou, Lost River and the Snake River Plain.
34. JUNIPER, WESTERN - Conifer woodland principally dominated by western juniper Juniperus occidentalis at canopies < 30%.
35. JUNIPER, WESTERN - Conifer woodland principally dominated by western juniper Juniperus occidentalis at canopies from 30-59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolius.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Chrysothamunus visicidiflorus, Purshia tridentata, and Symphoricarpos oreophilus.

Distribution - This class is found only in Owyhee.
37. LODGEPOLE - Conifer woodland principally dominated by lodgepole Pinus contorta at canopies < 30%.
38. LODGEPOLE - Conifer forest principally dominated by lodgepole Pinus contorta at canopies from 30-59%.
39. LODGEPOLE - Conifer forest principally dominated by lodgepole pine Pinus contorta at canopies > 59%.
40. LODGEPOLE SAPLING - Conifer sapling forest principally dominated by lodgepole pine Pinus contorta in sapling form.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasocarpa, Picea engelmannii, Pinus albicaulis, Populas tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp., Ribes spp., Shepardia canadensis and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is absent in Owyhee, and very rare in Snake River Plain (only on Big Butte). It is found in all other mapping zones, being very common in Caribou, Frank Church, Sawtooth and Shoshone.
41. PONDEROSA PINE - Conifer woodland principally dominated by ponderosa pine Pinus ponderosa at canopies < 30%.
42. PONDEROSA PINE - Conifer forest principally dominated by ponderosa pine Pinus ponderosa at canopies from 30-59%.
44. PONDEROSA PINE SAPLING - Conifer sapling forest principally dominated by ponderosa pine Pinus ponderosa in sapling form.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies grandis, Pinus contorta, Populus tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Berberis repens, Physocarpus malvaceus, Prunus virginiana, Purshia tridentata, Ribes spp., Symphoricarpos spp., and Spiraea betulifolia.

Distribution - This class occurs most commonly in Payette, with significant amounts also in Frank Church and Sawtooth. It occurs in limited distribution in Lost River.
46. SPRUCE, ENGELMANN - Conifer forest principally dominated by engelmann spruce Picea engelmannii at canopies from 30-59%.
47. SPRUCE, ENGELMANN - Conifer forest principally dominated by engelmann spruce Picea engelmannii at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasocarpa, Abies grandis, Pinus contorta, Pinus albicaulis, Populas tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Acer glabrum, Ledum glandulosum, Lonicera utahensis, Ribes spp., and Vaccinium spp.
Distribution - This class is occurs abundantly in Shoshone, and sparingly in Payette.
48. SUBALPINE PINE - Conifer woodland principally dominated either by whitebark pine Pinus albicaulis or limber pine Pinus flexilis at canopies < 30%.
49. SUBALPINE PINE - Conifer forest principally dominated either by whitebark pine Pinus albicaulis or limber pine Pinus flexilis at canopies from 30-59%.
50. SUBALPINE PINE - Conifer forest principally dominated either by whitebark pine Pinus albicaulis or limber pine Pinus flexilis at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasiocarpa, Picea engelmannii, Pinus contorta and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Juniperus communis, Ledum glandulosum, Lonicera utahensis, Ribes spp., Shepardia canadensis, Symphoricarpos spp., and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is typically represented by Whitebark pine. This class is absent in Cassia, Owyhee and Snake River Plain. It is found in all other mapping zones with it being most abundant in Frank Church, Lost River and Sawtooth.
52. DOUG FIR/LIMBER - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii and limber pine Pinus flexilis at canopies from 30-59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasiocarpa, Cercocarpus ledifolius, Picea englemannii, Pinus contorta, and Populas Tremuloides,
Primary associated shrub species includes, Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia tridentata, Physocarpus malvaceus, Prunus virginiana, Purshia tridentata, Ribes spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class is found with limited distribution only in Shoshone.
55. PINYON/JUNIPER - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by singleleaf pinyon Pinus monophylla and utah juniper Juniperus osterosperma at canopies from 30-59%.
56. PINYON/JUNIPER - Conifer forest principally co-dominated by singleleaf pinyon Pinus monophylla and utah juniper Juniperus osterosperma at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolius..
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Chrysothamnus spp., Purshia tridentata, Prunus virginian and Symphoricarpos oreophilus.

Distribution - This class is found only in Cassia, around the City of Rocks.
OTHER TREES
60. ASPEN - Woodland principally dominated by aspen Populus tremuloides at canopies < 30%.
61. ASPEN - Forest principally dominated by aspen Populus tremuloides at canopies from 30-59%.
62. ASPEN - Forest principally dominated by aspen Populus tremuloides at canopies > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasiocarpa, Picea engelmannii, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus contorta and Pseudotsuga menziesii,
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Berberis repens, Ceanothus spp., Lonicera utahensis, Pachistima myrsinites, Prunus virginiaia, Ribes spp., Rosa spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class is absent in Frank Church, Payette and Snake River Plain. It is most common in Caribou.
64. ASPEN/CONIFER - Forest principally co-dominated by aspen Populus tremuloides and several conifers including sub alpine fir Abies lasiocarpa, lodgepole pine Pinus contorta, and doug fir Pseudotsuga menziesii at canopies from 30-59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes, Picea engelmannii and Pinus ponderosa.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Berberis repens, Ceanothus spp., Lonicera utahensis, Pachistima myrsinites, Prunus virginiaia, Ribes spp., Rosa spp., Symphoricarpos spp., and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is absent in Lost River, Owyhee, Payette and Snake River Plain. It is most common in Caribou.
67. MAPLE - Forest principally dominated by maple Acer glabrum at canopies from 30-59%
68. MAPLE - Forest principally dominated by maple Acer glabrum at canopies> 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolious, Juniperus osteosperma, Populas tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Berberis repens, Ceanothus spp., Lonicera utahensis, Pachistima myrsinites, Prunus virginiaia, Purshia tridentata, Ribes spp, Rosa spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class occurs only in Caribou and Cassia, typically in foothills.
69. MOUNTAIN MAHOGANY - Woodland principally dominated by curlleaf mountain mahogany Cercocarpus ledifolious at canopies from < 30%.
70. MOUNTAIN MAHOGANY - Forest principally dominated by curlleaf mountain mahogany Cercocarpus ledifolious at canopies from 30-59%.
71. MOUNTAIN MAHOGANY - Forest principally dominated by curlleaf mountain mahogany Cercocarpus ledifolious at canopies from > 59%.
  Primary associated tree species includes Juniperus osteosperma, Pinus monophylla and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Berberis repens, Ceanothus spp., Lonicera utahensis, Pachistima myrsinites, Prunus virginiaia, Purshia tridentata, Ribes spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class does not occur in Payette, Snake River Plain. It is most common in Lost River and Owyhee.
SHRUBS
75. BIG SAGEBRUSH - Shrubland principally dominated or co-dominated by basin big sagebrush Artemisia tridentata, and wyoming big sagebrush Artemisia tridentata wyomingenisis.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolious, Juniperus occidentalis, Juniperus osteosperma, Pinus monophylla and Pinus ponderosa.
Primary associated shrub species includes Atriplex confertifolia, Atriplex spinosa Artemisia arbuscula, Artemisia fridgia, Artemisia longiloba, Artemisia nova Chrysothamnus spp., Eurotia lanata, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Prunus virginiaia, Purshia tridentata, Ribes spp., Sarcobatus spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class occurs in all mapping zones, but is most common in Owyhee and Snake River Plain.
76. BITTERBRUSH - Shrubland principally dominated by bitterbrush Purshia tridentata.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolious, Juniperus occidentalis, Juniperus osteosperma, Pinus monophylla, Pinus ponderosa, Populus tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp., Chrysothamnus spp., Eurotia lanata, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Prunus virginiaia, Ribes spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class does not occur in Frank Church, Lost River, or Shoshone. It is most common in Caribou, Owyhee, Payette, and Sawtooth.
77. BURN_SHRUB - Shrubland initiated by fire and principally dominated or co-dominated by mixtures of shrubs.
  Principle shrub species includes alder, Alnus, spp., Serviceberry, Amelanchier alnifolia, oregon grape Berberis repens, snowbrush Ceanothus spp., ninebark Physocarpus spp. Chokecherry, Prunus virginiaia, currant Ribes spp., Scouler willow Salix scouleriana and Snowberry Symphoricarpos spp.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp., and Purshia tridentata

Distribution - This class occurs only in Frank Church, Sawtooth and Shoshone. Burn areas identified are typically recent and extensive.
78. CLEARCUT_SHRUB - Shrubland initiated by a recent clearcut harvest and principally dominated or co-dominated by mixtures of shrubs.
  Principle shrub species includes alder, Alnus, spp., serviceberry Amelanchier alnifolia, oregon grape Berberis repens, snowbrush Ceanothus spp., ninebark Physocarpus spp. Chokecherry, Prunus virginiaia, currant Ribes spp., scouler willow Salix scouleriana, and snowberry Symphoricarpos spp.
Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasiocarpa, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus contorta and Pseudotsuga menziesii.

Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp. and Purshia tridentata

Distribution - This class occurs only in Frank Church, Payette and Sawtooth. Clear-cuts are typically older with trees still in the seedling stage.
80. LOW SAGEBRUSH - Shrubland principally dominated, or co-dominated, by low sagebrush Artemisia arbuscula, Artemisia frigida, Artemisia longiloba and Artemisia nova.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolious, Juniperus occidentalis, Juniperus osteosperma, Pinus monophylla and Pinus ponderosa.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia tridentata spp., Atriplex confertifolia, Atriplex spinosa, Chrysothamus spp., Eurotia lanata, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Purshia tridentata and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class does not occur in Shoshone, but is most common in Lost River and Owyhee. A difficult class to map because low sage often occurs in mosaic patterns with big sage and also occurs on soils that spectrally have many colors.
81. MONTANE SHRUB - Shrubland principally dominated or co-dominated by alder, Alnus spp., serviceberry, Amelanchier alnifolia, Oregon Grape Berberis repens, snowbrush Ceanothus spp., ninebark Physocarpus spp., Chokecherry Prunus virginiana, currant Ribes spp., scouler willow Salix scoulerian and snowberry Symphoricarpos spp.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies lasiocarpa, Cercocarpus ledifolious , Picea engelmannii, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus contorta, Populus tremuloide, and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp. and Purshia tridentata.

Distribution - This is a widespread class occurring in all mapping zones, but most dominate in Caribou, Cassia, Payette and Sawtooth. It typically occurs in more mesic environments.
82. MOUNTAIN BIG SAGE - Shrubland principally dominated by mountain big sage Artemisia tridentata vaseyana.
  Primary associated tree species includes Abies grandis, Abies lasiocarpa, Cercocarpus ledifolious, Pinus albicaulis, Pinus contorta, Pinus flexilis, Pinus ponderosa, Populus tremuloides and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Arctostaphylos spp., Artemisia spp., Ceanothus spp., Cercocarpus montanus, Physocarpus spp., Prunus virginiaia, Purshia tridentata, Ribes spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class occurs in all mapping zones, but is most restricted in Snake River Plain. This class is least well defined in the interface zone between mountain sage and Wyoming and basin big sage.
83. MOUNTAIN LOW SAGE - Shrubland principally dominated by mountain low sage Artemisia arbuscula.
  Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolious, Pinus albicaulis, Pinus contorta, Pinus flexilis, Pinus ponderosa and Pseudotsuga menziesii.
Primary associated shrub species includes Arctostaphylos spp., Artemisia spp., Ceanothus spp., Cercocarpus montanus, Physocarpus spp., Prunus virginiaia, Purshia tridentata, Ribes spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class does not occur in Frank Church, Payette or Snake River Plain. It is most common in Caribou, Lost River and Sawtooth.
84. RABBITBRUSH - Shrubland principally dominated by rubber rabbitbrush Chrysothamnus nauseosus, and low rabbitbrush Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus.
  Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp., Atriplex confertifolia, Atriplex spinosa, Eurotia lanata, Gutierrezia sarothrae Purshia tridentata, and Sarcobatus vermiculatus.
Distribution - This class occurs only in Caribou, Owyhee and Snake River Plain.
85. SALT DESERT SHRUB - Shrubland principally dominated or co-dominated by budsage Artemisia spinescens, shadscale Atriplex confertifolia, 4 wing saltbush Atriplex spinosa, and greasewood Sarcobatus vermiculatus.
  Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp.,Chrysothamnus spp., Eurotia lanat and Gutierrezia sarothrae.
Distribution - This class occurs only in Cassia, Lost River and Owyhee, typically in low elevation zones near the Snake River.
86. SILVER SAGE - Shrubland principally dominated by silver sage Artemisia cana.
  Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp., Potentilla fruiticosa, Ribes spp., and Salix spp.
Distribution - This class occurs only in limited areas of Caribou.
87. ALPINE SHRUB - Shrubland principally dominated or co-dominated by willow Salix spp. and blueberry Vaccinium spp.
  Primary associated shrub species includes Potentilla fruiticosa, Ribes spp., and Symphoricarpos albus.
Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmannii, Pinus albicaulis and Pinus flexilis.

Primary associated forb species includes Arenaria congesta, Astragalus spp., Draba densifolia, Erigeron spp., Lupinus argenteus and Saxifraga spp.

Primary associated Grass and Sedge species includes Agropyron scribneri, Carex spp., Deschampsia caespitosa, Festuca ovina, Phleum alpinum, Poa rupicola and Trisetum spicatum.

Distribution - This class occurs only in Shoshone, mostly in the Wind River Mountains.
HERBACEOUS
90. ALPINE HERBACEOUS - Alpine vegetation consisting of a combination of forbs, grasses and sedges.
  Principle Forb Species includes Antennaria rosea, Arenaria congesta, Astragalus spp., Draba densifolia, Erigeron spp., Geum spp., Lupinus argenteus, Phlox spp., Saxifraga spp., and Trifolium spp.
Principle Grass and Sedge species includes Agropyron scribneri, A.trachycaulum, Carex spp., Deschampsia caespitosa, Festuca ovina, F.rubra, Phleum alpinum, Poa spp., and Trisetum spicatum.

Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp., Dryas spp., Potentilla fruiticosa, Ribes spp., Salix spp., and Vaccinium spp.

Primary associated tree species includes Picea engelmannii, Pinus albicaulis and Pinus flexilis.

Distribution - This class occurs above timberline in all mapping zones except in Owyhee and Snake River Plain. It is especially common in Caribou, Lost River and Shoshone. Floristic composition can vary widely in alpine zones, and the listed species are only a sample of the most common.
91. ANNUAL GRASS/FORB - Grassland dominated or co-dominated by cheatgrass Bromus tectorum, medusahead Taeniatherum asperum, or several forbs including Lepidium perfoliatum, Salsola kali and Sisymbrium altissimum.
  Primary associated Perennial Grass species includes Agropyron spp., Aristida longiseta, Festuca idahoensis, Oryzopsis hymenoides, Poa spp., and Stipa spp..
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia spp., Atriplex confertifolia, Chrysothamnus spp., Eurotia lanata, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Purshia tridentata.

Primary associated tree species includes Juniperus occidentalis and Juniperus osteosperma.

Distribution - This class occurs in Cassia, Owyhee, Payette, and Snake River Plain. It is typically on flat, lower elevation areas and usually has some perennial grasses present. It is often difficult to spectrally distinguish from adjacent seeded perennial dominated grasslands.
92. BURN_HERBACEOUS - Grass or forb dominated recent burn.
  Distribution - This class is an effort to identify areas of recent intense burns and occurs in Caribou, Frank Church, Payette, Sawtooth and Shoshone. This class contains an extremely wide latitude of early successional herbaceous species, with floristic composition varying from foothills to mountains.
93. CLEARCUT_HERBACEOUS - Grass or forb dominated recent clearcut.
  Distribution - This class is an effort to identify areas of recent clearcut harvest areas, and occurs in Caribou, Frank Church, Payette, Sawtooth and Shoshone. This class contains an extremely wide latitude of early successional herbaceous species, with floristic composition varying within mapping zone.
94. DRY MEADOW - Grass and forb co-dominated dry meadow.
  Principal forb species includes yarrow Achillea millefolium, hawkbit Agoseris pumila, arrowleaf balsamroot Balsamorhiza sagittata, golden aster Chrysopis villosa, larkspur Delphinium spp., richardson geranium geranium richardsonii, penstemon spp., phlox Phlox spp., dandelion Taraxacum officinale and mulesears Wyethia amplexicaulis.
Principal grass species includes wheatgrass Agropyron spp.,shorthair Calamagrostis spp., sedges Carex spp., tufted hairgrass Deschampsia caespitosa, fescue Festuca spp., timothy Phleum spp., poa's poa spp., needlegrass Stipa spp., and spike trisetum Trisetum spicatum.

Primary associated shrub species includes sagebrush Artemisia spp., cinquefoil Potentilla fruitcosa, Currant Ribes spp., snowberry Symphoricarpos spp., and willow Salix spp.

Distrubtion - This class occurs in all mapping zones, but is especially abundant in Caribou and Shoshone. It typically occurs on flatter slopes in montane zones.
95. PERENNIAL GRASS - Grassland dominated by seeded crested wheatgrass Agropyron cristatum and other common seeded grass species.
  Primary Associated Grass species includes Agropyron spp., Aristida longi seta Bromus tectorum, Festuca idahoensis, Poa spp., Stipa spp., and Taeniatherum asperu.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia tridentata spp., Atriplex confertifolia, Chrysothamnus spp., Eurotia lanata, Gutierrezia sarothrae and Purshia tridentata.

Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolious, Juniperus occidentalis and Juniperus osteosperma.

Distrubtion - This class is absent in Frank Church and most abundant in Cassia, Owyhee, Payette and Snake River Plain. It is typically on flatter, lower elevation areas and usually has some annual grasses present. It is often difficult to spectrally distinguish from adjacent annual dominated grasslands.
96. PERENNIAL GRASS SLOPE - Grassland dominated or co-dominated by native perennial grass species such as bluebunch wheatgrass Agropyron spicatum, idaho fescue Festuca idahoensis, junegrass Koeleria cristata and mutton bluegrass Poa sandbergii on foothill and canyon slopes above 15 degrees.
  Primary Associated Grass species includes Agropyron spp., Aristida longiseta, Bromus spp., Festuca spp., Poa spp., and Stipa spp.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia tridentata spp., Chrysothamnus spp., Gutierrezia sarothrae, Purshia tridentata, and Rhus glabrum.
Primary associated tree species includes Cercocarpus ledifolious, Juniperus occidentalis, Juniperus osteosperma and Pinus ponderosa.
Distrubtion - This class is most abundant in the canyons and foothills of northern Frank Church and Payette.
97. PERENNIAL GRASS MONTANE- - Grassland ridges, forest openings and meadows dominated or co-dominated by native perennial montane or subalpine grass species.
  Principle species includes wheatgrass Agropyron spp., tufted hairgrass Calamagrostis rubescen oatgrass Danthonia spp., idaho fescue Festuca idahoensis, junegrass Koeleria cristata, timothy Phleum spp., and bluegrass Poa spp.
Primary associated forb species includes Achillea millefolium, Agoseris pumila, arrowleaf Balsamorhiza sagittata, Chrysopis villosa, Delphinium spp., geranium richardsonii, penstemon spp., Phlox spp., Taraxacum officinale and Wyethia amplexicaulis.

Distribution - This class tends to be found on areas of higher slope and is located in all mapping zones, except for Owyhee.
98. TALL FORB MONTANE - Sub-alpine tall forb dominated communities.
  Principle species includes Agastache urticifolia, Arnica spp., Artemisia ludoviciana, Balsamorhiza spp., Caltha leptosepala,Castilleja spp., Delphinium occidentale, Epilobium angustifolium, Geranium spp., Heracleum lanatum, Ligusticum filicinum, Lupinus spp., Mertensia ciliata, Polygonum bistortoides, Rudbeckia occidentalis, Solidago canadensis, Vateriana edulis, Veratum californicum and Wyethia amplexicaulis.
Primary associated shrub species includes Amelanchier alnifolia, Artemisia spp., Potentilla fruitcosa, Ribes spp., and Symphoricarpos spp.

Distribution - This class can be found in Caribou, Payette, Sawtooth, and Shoshone mapping zones.
99. WET MEADOW - Grass and forb co-dominated mountain meadows where soil moisture is abundant throughout the growing season.
  Principle species includes reedgrass Calamagrostis spp., sedges Carex spp , hairgrass Deschampsia cespitosa, willowherb Epilobium spp., rushes Juncus spp., timothy Phleum spp., bluegrass Poa spp., and saxifrage Saxifraga spp.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia cana, Lonicera spp., Potentilla spp.,Salix spp., and Vaccinium spp.

Distribution - This class is found on flat areas with a awide variety of floristic compostion. It is most abundant in Caribou and Shoshone mapping zones.
MISCELLANEOUS
101. BARREN - Barren soil with less than 5 percent total vegetative cover.
  Distribution - This class is found sparingly in Caribou, Owyhee, Shoshone, and Snake River Plain is typically disturbed areas such as mud flats, river sand bars or bare soil.
102. LAVA - Lava rock with less than 5 percent total vegetative cover.
  Distribution - This class can only be found in the Snake River Plain.
103. LAVA_VEGETATED - Lava with greater than 5 percent total vegetative cover, with plants occuring as islands or pockets in the lava flow.
  Primary associated Grass species includes Agropyron spp., Aristida longiseta Bromus tectorum, Festuca idahoensis, Poa spp., Stipa spp., and Taeniatherum asperum.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia tridentata spp., Chrysothamnus spp., Gutierrezia sarothrae and Purshia tridentata.

Primary associated tree species includes Juniperus osteosperma.

Distribution - This class can only be found in the Snake River Plain.
104. ROCK - Rock or talus with less than 5 percent total vegetative cover.
  Distribution - This class is located in all mapping zones with very little in Cassia, Frank Church, Owyhee, and Payette. This class typically occurs at higher elevations, with greatest concentrations above tree timberline.
105. SAND DUNE - Sand dunes with less than 5 percent total vegetative cover.
  Distribution - This class is found only in Caribou at the Rexburg dunes, and in Owyhee at the Bruneau dunes.
106. SAND DUNE_VEGETATED - Sand dunes with greater than 5 percent total vegetative cover.
  Primary Associated Grass species includes Agropyron spp, Elymus flavascens, Oryzopsis hymenoides, Sporobolus cryptandra and Stipa comata.
Primary associated shrub species includes Artemisia tridentata spp., Chrysothamnus spp., Gutierrezia sarothrae, Prunus virginiana and Purshia tridentata.

Primary associated tree species includes Juniperus osteosperma.

Distribution - This class is found in Caribou at the Rexburg dunes, and in Owyhee at the Bruneau dunes.
107. WATER - Open water.
  Distribution - Located statewide.
108. SNOW - High elevation snow drifts still occurring when the satellite image was taken.
  Distribution - Caribou and Shoshone have some high elevation snow.
RIPARIAN
111. DECIDUOUS TREE RIPARIAN - Riparian forests dominated or co-dominated by black cottonwood Populus trichorcarpa and narrowleaf cottonwood Populus angustifolia.
  Primary associated tree species includes Acer glabrum, Alnus incana, Betula occidentalis and Populus tremuloides.
Primary associated shrub species includes Prunus virginiana and Salix spp.

Distribution - This class is found in all mapping zones, especially caribou.
112. RIVERINE RIPARIAN - Is a mixed riparian class dominated by conifer species and shrubs.
  Primary Associated tree species includes Abies lasiocarpa ,Acer glabrum, Picea engelmanni, Pinus contorta, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Populus spp.
Primary Associated shrub species includes Amerlanchier spp., Prunus virginiana, Ribes spp., and Salix spp.

Distribution - This class is located in all mapping zones with very little in Owyhee and Snake River Plain. Occurs along steep, > 10% slope, border-line edges of riparian zones in mountainous regions.
113. HERBACEOUS RIPARIAN - Herbaceous riparian consists of various sedge Carex spp., rush Juncas spp., and forb species.
  Primary Associated grass species includes Juncus balticus, Danthonia intermedia, Deschampsia cespitosa, Festuca spp, Poa spp., and Phleum spp.
Primary Associated forb species includes Caltha leptosepala, Equisetum arvense, Galium triglorum, Gerarium richardsonii., Mertensisa spp., and Pedicularis groenlandica, Polygonum bistortoides, Thalictrum fendleri and Typha spp.

Distribution - This class is found in all mapping zones except Cassia.
114. SHRUB RIPARIAN - Shrub riparian is dominated by willow Salix spp.
  Primary Associated tree species includes Populus spp.
Primary Associated shrub species includes Acer negundo, Alnus incana, Artemisia cana, Betula glandulosa, Potentilla fruticosa and Prunus virginiana.

Primary Associated grass species includes Carex spp., and Deschampsia cespitosa.

Primary Associated forb species includes Geranium richardsonni, Pedicularis groenlandica and Polygonum bistortoides.

Distribution - This class is very abundant in every mapping zone.
WETLAND
120. DEEP MARSH - Marsh permanently flooded, dominated or co-dominated by bulrush Scirpus spp., and cattail Typha spp.
  Distribution - This class is located in all mapping zones.
121. SHALLOW MARSH - Marsh semi-permanently flooded, dominated or co-dominated by bulrush Scirpus spp., cattail Typha spp., spikerush Eleocharis spp., baltic rush Juncus balticus var. montanus and sedges Carex spp.
  Distribution - This class is located in all mapping zones.
122. AQUATIC BED - Aquatic Beds dominated or co-dominated by pondweed Potamogeton spp., duckweed Lemna spp., and water smartweed Polygonum amphibium var. emersum.
  Distribution - This class is not located in any mapping zone.
123. MUD FLAT - Mud and Saline flats seasonally flooded with less than 5% vegetative cover that are adjacent to wetlands.
  Distribution - This class is located in Caribou, Cassia, Payette, Sawtooth, and Shoshone mapping zones.
LAND-USE
126. AGRICULTURAL - Row crops, irrigated pasture and hay fields, dry farm crops and fallow fields.
  Distribution - Located statewide. Very little in Frank Church and Sawtooth mapping zones.
129. DISTURBED, HIGH - Large mines, airports, and golf courses that are separated from urban areas.
  Distribution - Located in all the mapping zones except Lost River.
130. DISTURBED, LOW - Small mines, gravel pits, and airplane landing strips.
  Distribution - Located in all mapping zones except Lost River.
131. URBAN, HIGH DENSITY - Towns and cities with populations greater than 1,000.
132. URBAN, LOW DENSITY - Towns with populations less than 1,000 and gas stations/rest areas.
