Utah Test & Training Range Hill Air Force Base SPOT Imagery Vegetation Classification Project

[Completed December 2000]

Hill Air Force Base manages approximately 960,000 acres of land in Box Elder and Tooele Counties for the North and South Utah Test and Training Ranges (UTTR). In an effort to compile the information system UDWR has subcontracted with RS/GIS Laboratories at Utah State University (USU) the task of classifying satellite imagery to produce a land cover image.  This classified imagery will be used by UDWR to map and inventory T/E/C species within the UTTR and surrounding areas. The overall objective of this project was to map land cover within and surrounding the UTTR using SPOT-4 imagery.  Specific objectives included the following:

A final classification map was produced for the 12 classes. The overall accuracy for all cover types (with the exception of Clouds and Salt Evaporation Ponds) was 74 percent.
