Setting up Samba

  1. Get a Samba account if you don't already have one. See John Weeks for this.
  2. Map a drive to the earth1 Samba server.
  3. On Windows:
    1. See more detailed directions here.
    2. In a file explorer window (such as My Computer) choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu.
    3. Select a drive letter to use.
    4. In the Folder box, type \\earth1.jql.usu.edu\naomi\samba
    5. Decide if you want this connection to be created every time you log in to your Windows machine.
    6. If your Samba username and password are different from your Windows username and password, select Connect using a different user name (XP) or Connect using different credentials (Windows 7) and enter your Samba username and password.
    7. Hit Finish.
    On Macs:
    1. Select Connect to Server from the Go menu in Finder.
    2. The Server Address is smb://earth1.jql.usu.edu/naomi/samba
    3. To make the connection be created whenever you log in to your Mac, open System Preferences and then Accounts. Select your account and go to the Login Items tab. Use the Add button to select the share that you just created.
  4. You can change your Samba password here.
