Homework Assignment 3
due Feb 21 2003
- 1.
- You are asked to investigate the point pattern of the point pattern of
the magentic anomoly readings in the Mojave desert. You have performed a
quadrat analysis (in lab 5). Present the results of the work that you did
in that lab. Specifically:
- (a)
- State your hypothesis that you wished to test with the exercise
- (b)
- State the assumptions that are implicit with the use of a quadrat
analysis
- (c)
- describe the methodology that you used to concuct the quadrat analysis
- (d)
- what are your conclusions as to the distribution of the points?
- (e)
- How do you think the outcome of the analysis would have changed if you
had used the entire area of your view, rather than region3.shp as
the boundary of your study area?
- 2.
- In Lab 6, you computed the Moran coefficient to test for autocorrelation
in the number of points that formed the quadrat squares.
- (a)
- Describe your methodologies used in computing the Moran coefficient
- (b)
- Compute the expected Expected values for I and Var(I) (the
variance of I)
- (c)
- Using a Z test (as outlined in the handout from Bonham-Carter's
book****), state whether the quadrat squares show any significant
autocorrelation.
