In 2010, the RS/GIS Laboratory and the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (UDFFSL) collaborated to map urban tree canopy for the Wasatch Front urban corridor and select areas of Iron and Washington counties in southwestern Utah. Using Feature Analyst for ArcGIS, an object-based image analysis software program, and 2009 National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial imagery, urban tree canopy was accurately mapped. In 2013, the UDFFSL contacted the RS/GIS Laboratory to develop an urban tree canopy report template for municipalities within the area of analysis. An urban tree canopy report for each municipality was deemed important in distributing information and data from the urban tree canopy mapping study. A 10-page report for the municipality of Farmington in Davis County, Utah, was generated as a template. Using zoning district and property parcel data, quantifications of urban tree canopy were calculated and displayed using maps, graphs, and tables.
